Are Online Sweepstakes Games Worth the Effort?

online sweepstakes games

They are on almost every Web site and Facebook page: annoying pop-up online sweepstakes games ads offering free vacations and iPods, for example. But can anyone win anything?

“Good Morning America” technology subscriber Becky Worley spent a whole day entering competitions and tracking outcomes for a week. Did she gain, or did she get her life sick with spam and telemarketers?

Becky’s Diary

I determined to try entering online casino contests for myself. Every pop-up offer I found, I said yes. I searched Google for “competitions” and just started opening one online sweepstakes games after another. For a whole day, I performed to the task and ended up coming dozens if not a hundred or so competitions.

I created a new e-mail profile to use with all the listing forms. I wanted to keep my working e-mail profile free of junk, but I also wanted to learn how much spam the competitions generated. I assumed that would be sufficient to keep myself separate from the competition solicitors, but almost every record form mandated street address and a phone number. I used the usual ABC street address and bought a paid phone to handle any incoming texts or calls.

And did I get texts! Almost immediately after filling out some contests’ entry forms I got text messages with a PIN number. They encouraged me to go backward to the entrance area and enter the PIN so I could get even more opportunities to win.

Buried on the Web sites was data about this resulting in a $9.99 monthly price on my cell telephone bill. These were selected text scams, and third-party groups get you to enter a PIN and receive their fees. While premium texting is a big way to pay for ringtones or use your mobile phone to give to the Red Cross, it’s also an obvious way to trick you into spending $10 a month or further into a black hole.

I did not accept any of the bonus text offers, but I did proceed to enter contests. I found some that looked sure like one on the nba.com site and one on the M&M’s site. I also started Facebook competitions where you become a fan of a club or group to get a fortune to win.

Twitter confirmed to be an attractive new venue for competitions. I entered nine competitions there. Most seem like ploys to get more members, including some very legit-looking games from author Vivienne Tam, and a Web site I understand and like called DealsPlus. But many Twitter contests seemed utterly bogus, including one offered by a guy with 72 members and a page full with typos.

We asked the groups at the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) about these contests online sweepstakes games to decide if the legal problems for Internet games are different from those in the real world, and they told us they are the same. And they said they have never had a charge about an online casino contest.

But I say: It’s difficult to get all wrought up about not getting a contest — who can remember if it was a scam or the odds.

So that gives the big problem; does anyone win these online casino contests?
